More about Los Altos

Los Altos began its development in the early 1900s but saw exponential growth between 1950 and 1980. It was originally an agricultural town with several apricot orchards and summer cottages for neighboring cities and especially San Jose. Today, Los Altos is an affluent bedroom community on the western edge of Silicon Valley. It is one of the most affluent communities in the area.

The city is primarily a semi-rural atmosphere as it restricts commercial zones to the downtown area and small shopping center only. The minimum lot size for most residential housing is one-quarter of an acre and most streets have brought shoulders and the downtown is a triangular area with arterials and collector streets on all sides.

Los Altos schools

The Los Altos school district is one of the top employers in the area and features seven elementary schools, and one intermediate or middle school. The school district has one of the highest average API scores in the state and most residents generally attend the high school in either Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District or the Fremont Union High School District. Many graduates continue education at well-known universities in-state and out-of-state. Los Altos also has several private and religious schools for kindergarten through 12th grade.

Los Altos Parks and Recreation

From the historic museum to a vibrant parks and departments, there’s always something for everyone in fantastic Los Altos. Redwood Grove is a 6 acre nature preserve off of University Avenue and the Adobe Creek flows directly through it offering a lot of recreational activities such as fishing and swimming.

The city features a variety of youth orientated sports as well such as soccer clubs, baseball clubs, cheerleading, football, and the YMCA summer camps and leagues. Each year, Los Altos features a variety of festivals such as a Main Street Parade, the Rotary Club of fine art show, Arts and Wine Festivals, farmers markets each summer on Thursdays from 4 to 8 PM, the Los Altos Fall Festival and antique shows, Festival of Lights, and a Halloween festival. People come from all around to enjoy some of the best festivals and activities in the Silicon Valley.

Los Altos Real Estate

Primarily residential, 83% of Los Altos residents own their own homes. The median home value is about $2 million with median rent at about $3200. While home values are high, excellent schools, low crime, diversity, nightlife, and family activities definitely keep Los Altos high on the popularity list.

Here's what folks say about living in Los Altos.

“Los Altos California is a wonderful place to live, and especially to raise children! It is safe and the people are usually very kind. The community areas like Downtown Los Altos are very quaint and have many local shopping opportunities. The schools here are also amazing, and provide so many resources to the students. Although, if you are someone who likes a more busy night life, this is not the place for you. There are very few places that are open after around 10PM.” – Niche.com

Los Altos Hills

Los Altos Hills is located southwest of the main town and is its own incorporated village in Santa Clara County. It’s home to just about 8200 residents. Similar to Los Altos, there is a ban on commercial zones and their only two retail operations including a bookstore and a gift shop.

Students are served by the Palo Alto Unified school district serving the northern part of town and the Los Altos school district serving the southern. There are several preschools and private coeducational K-12 schools in the hills.

Covering just 9 mi.², it is one of the smallest incorporated towns in Santa Clara County. It was founded back in 1956 and many are drawn due to the beautiful rolling hills and picturesque valleys. It still preserves a residential/agricultural lifestyle and you’ll see that with many of the architectural styles and gracious homes that dot the landscape. One of the most notable features of the city is its trail system. There are over 80 miles of trails and off-road paths meandering around the village. This is home to the Pathways Run, a yearly marathon for residents of all ages.
