Relocating to San Francisco

Known as the “Golden Gate City” or “The Golden City”, San Francisco, San Fran, or just Frisco to a lot of locals is the fourth most populated city in California with nearly 1 million residents. It covers a landmass of nearly 47 mi.² at the end of the San Francisco Peninsula making it the second most densely populated US city after New York.

So, if you’re planning to move to San Francisco or check out the local suburbs and surrounding areas, here are a few things to know about San Francisco proper and relocating to downtown.

1. Living in downtown can be expensive.

We are one of the most expensive places to live in California, but that also means we have some high-rise penthouses, luxury condominiums, and beautiful homes in and around the downtown area.

2. We have a competitive housing market.

Yes, San Francisco is still extremely competitive so it really pays to have a real estate agent who understands the area and knows the market in individual neighborhoods to be able to get the house you really want and the property you need.

3. Neighborhoods matter.

While, as a real estate agent, we cannot steer you to one neighborhood or the other, we can offer information and tips on different neighborhoods and what might work best for your budget and your lifestyle.

4. We have great weather.

You won’t find it as hot or as human in places like San Diego and because we are by the bay and the water, we have mild and cool weather practically year-round.

5. We have great transportation.

Our public transportation is some of the top rated in the country. It’s one of the best ways to get around whether it’s an Uber, the bus, subway system, Metro lines, or light rail.

6. There’s always something to do.

From the cliché Lombard Street to Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge, fantastic Pier 39Muir Woods, and all of the amazing places to eat, a foodie paradise, and activities every single weekend, there’s never a lack of things to do, see, and explore.

The historic center of downtown is the northeast quadrant of the city bordered by Market Street and the waterfront. There are several districts and regions including the Financial district, Union Square, Tenderloin, Fishermen’s Wharf, and the Western Addition. In the Southeast, the Mission District, Bernal Heights, Eureka Valley, and the Excelsior District are just a few of the more popular locations. There are currently over 80 micro-neighborhoods and communities throughout San Francisco and finding the perfect one for you is what we do best.

San Francisco Schools

Most public schools are operated by the San Francisco Unified School District, covering the entire city and County as well as the California State Board of Education for specific charter schools. San Francisco is home to local high school, the oldest public high school in the country west of the Mississippi. There are several early education and preschool programs, the University of California ranked among the top five medical schools in the US, the San Francisco State University part of the California State University, and the University of San Francisco just to name a few secondary education facilities.

San Francisco Real Estate

The San Francisco market is booming; the San Francisco market is cooling down… You’ll hear both depending on who you talk to. One thing is for certain, San Francisco real estate prices have always been some of the highest in the state. There are typically over 2000 real estate listings at any one time and about 150 brand-new homes or new construction properties. On average, most homes sell within about 90 days on the market and homes in higher-ranking school districts tend to sell faster. The average list price is between $1 million and $1.5 million for a single-family home. Condominiums are typically priced from $900,000 to $1.4 million.
